Objectives
1. To catch up with the international level of research on Eurasia In view of the geographically strategic position of Eurasia, many international research institutes have been established to study this area. However, no such institutes have been established yet in Taiwan. As a result, misunderstandings of the situations in Eurasia often occur in our industry, government, and academia, as well as in different political parties and even the media. A good example is CPC (Chinese Petroleum Corporation), which lost a US$35 million investment in the oil drilling business in Kazakhstan because the corporation had very little knowledge of the political and economic situation in this country and also due to a lack of appropriate contacts. Therefore, the establishment of the Eurasia Research Center of our university will initiate and promote academic exchange and research of this area, set up bilateral or multilateral economic, trade, technical, cultural and academic exchange systems, and eventually catch up to the international progress.
2. To promote bilateral academic, technical, economic, trade, and cultural relations
As Taiwan has not established any official or non-official exchange organizations in Eurasia or Central Asia, we rarely have any economic and trade interactions but only indirect or small trade with this area. In terms of academic, technical, and cultural exchange, Eurasia is still a virgin land that needs to be developed, especially in the areas of diplomacy, economy, and trade. The EurasiaResearchCenter of our university is expected to be a key research institute in this area. It is also anticipated to play an important role as the “window” and “bridge” that helps to establish and promote bilateral government relations and private economic, trade, cultural, technical, and academic exchange between Taiwan and Eurasia.
