STATEMENT by the CYU PRESIDENT
I am very honored to have begun service at Ching Yun University on August 1 of this year. Since its establishment in 1965, this school has progressed from Chien Hsin College of Technology to Ching Yun Institute of Technology to Ching Yun University. At present, it already has 4 colleges, 14 departments and graduate institutes, a university dormitory, and excellent facilities. This is all the result of the sustained support of the University Board, as well as of the effort of the former university presidents and teaching faculty. Over the past few years, the quality and quantity of this university’s student body has increased year by year. It is evident that this university’s academic management has already gained the affirmation of parents and every branch of society.
Ching Yun University’s focus mainly includes instruction, research, and service. In the past, the university has performed exceedingly well in all three of these areas. Its successes in the area of research have been especially outstanding. Over the past several years, the university has ranked at the forefront among private technical universities in terms of research projects awarded by the National Science Council. In addition to maintaining this research achievement, in the future we will give even more attention to raising educational quality and strengthening cooperation with industry. Ching Yun University is a technical university. After our students graduate, they will have relatively stronger practical abilities. As a consequence, they will have more advantages in obtaining employment than graduates of most universities. In order to preserve this advantage, we will emphasize the dual importance of theory and practice in our instruction. Moreover, we will enhance our students’ practical ability and experience via multiple means of cooperation with industry.
In addition, internationalization is a trend that cannot be avoided. Broadening our students’ international perspective is also an objective of our future efforts. First, we will establish ways to increase our students’ foreign language ability. Starting from this semester, Ching Yun University has established its “Foreign Language Instruction Center.” It is hoped that this professional unit will promote foreign language teaching. Concurrently, we are actively expanding treaties with our overseas sister schools in order to carry out student and faculty exchange, scholarly exchange, and a joining of our educational systems. In addition to have relationships with America’s university of Colorado and Russia’s Moscow Technical University, at present we are entering into relations with America’s Saint Leo University, Pennsylvania State University, and Appalachian State University. Nationally, we have already organized a strategic alliance with vocational high schools in the Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miao-li areas in order to strengthen our interaction and exchange and share our mutual resources. Ching Yun University’s faculty is excellent. Seventy percent of this faculty has Ph.D. degrees. Moreover, this year is the third consecutive year that the university has received funding from the Ministry of Education’s “Plan for Academic Excellence.” This is something of which we should all be proud.
This school has a long history, an excellent reputation, as well as an outstanding faculty and student body. I believe that, under this kind of advantageous conditions, if we all work together then we can push Ching Yun University to an even more sublime level and enter into the lists of Taiwan’s top tier universities.
